Troll The Trail Community Wellness Challenge
A virtual bike, run or walk event to promote health, fitness and wellbeing.
Troll the Trail is a virtual wellness challenge for all ages and all fitness levels. Challenge yourself this to get off the couch and enjoy the outdoors. The ultimate goal of Troll The Trail is to bring people together and achieve hundreds or even thousands of miles on the Riverside Park Trail System.
What is a virtual event?
Troll The Trail is not a race or competition, but rather an ongoing event to promote a healthy, active lifestyle. As a virtual event, you get to set your own goal: miles, hours or steps. Plus, you get to decide what activity you want to do on the trail: bike, run or walk… or some combination of them all. Track your progress or don’t… the goal is to give you a reason to get out and enjoy the awesome trail system.
Register as an individual or as a team!
Organize a team and do a challenge of 100, 200 or 500 miles… incentivize participation with your own team awards and encourage your co-workers to get out and get active. Maybe your goal is to lose weight, count steps (a pedometer would be a big help!) or lay down mile after mile.
If you prefer, you can participate as an individual, too. Individuals can set whatever goal they decide. Again, the point is to be active and have fun!
Your registration fee profits help fund the Riverside Park Trail System that is maintained by the Vinton Off Road Cyclists (VORC). VORC volunteers work to maintain and improve existing trails, build new trails, and beautifying the trail system (benches, bike/trail features, bridges, plants/flowers for erosion control, etc.). There is so much we want to do to improve our trail system and to make Vinton a destination stop for mountain bike enthusiasts.

IS THIS A FUNDRAISER?
Yes, your registration fee proceeds will be donated to VORC (Vinton Off Road Cyclists) Riverside Trail System maintenance fund which includes: maintaining and improving existing trails, building of additional trails, and beautifying the trails (bike/trail features, bridges, pretty plants/flowers, benches etc.). There is SO MUCH we want to do to improve our trail system for everyone to enjoy!
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
EVERYONE is encouraged to participate! All ages and all fitness levels are welcome. It’s a great way to stay motivated and get physical activity in the great outdoors. Invite your family, friends, neighbors or co-workers to participate with you.
It’s a great opportunity for businesses, community groups, and organizations to participate in a community event, get physical activity, and have fun by creating a group goal or an internal competition!
HOW DO I REGISTER?
It’s easy! Individual registration is $30.
If you prefer to register offline, you can download printed registration form and return it to Vinton Parks & Recreation office with the registration fee. The VPRD office is located at the Recreation Center, 701 A St E, Vinton, IA 52349 (Regular Office Hours are Mon–Fri from 8:00AM – 4:30PM).

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY SWEET MEDAL?
Your medal will be mailed to you. Please allow up to 14 days to receive your medal by mail. If you do not receive your medal, please send an email to ‘email@example.com’ with the subject line “Troll The Trail Medal.”
HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?
The concept is simple, you set yourself a personal mileage or activity time goal to bike, run and/or walk. You can even make it more challenging for yourself by completing a goal for multiple types of activities. Then all you need to do is get started and track your progress. The main point is to CHALLENGE YOURSELF, HAVE FUN and successfully COMPLETE YOUR GOAL.
WHERE DO I GO TO PARTICIPATE?
All participants are encouraged to bike, run or walk on the Riverside Park Trail system. The Riverside Upper (Singletrack) trailhead is located just behind home plate at Lion’s Field. Enter the Riverside Lower (Multipurpose) trailhead on the north side at the base of the sledding hill. The map is available to view on our home page.
Or you can enjoy other local trails – Old Creamery Nature Trail, Cedar Valley Nature Trail, or Roger’s Park Nature Trail. As much as we would love for everyone to experience our Riverside Trail System, you are not required to use these specific trails to participate. This is your wellness challenge, therefore your activity can be completed ANYWHERE you choose – around your neighborhood or work place or even indoors on a treadmill or stationary bike. You decide. It’s your challenge.
HOW MANY MILES OR HOW MUCH ACTIVITY TIME DO I NEED TO COMPLETE?
There’s no minimum or maximum distance or activity time requirement. It’s your challenge, do it your way. You could run or walk a 5K, 10K or ½ Marathon, bike 25, 50, 100 or even 500 miles. Run or walk 15, 30 or 60 minutes 5 days a week. Just be sure to set yourself a goal that stretches you but isn’t impossible. Have fun with it!
DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE MY MILES OR ACTIVITY TIME GOAL(S) ALL AT ONCE?
It’s up to you. Complete the distance or activity time goal(s) all at one time (if that’s your personal challenge) or spread it out over the year. You can participate with a group or create a competition amongst friends, family, neighbors or co-workers. Business owners and leaders – challenge your employees and create a fun way to encourage physical activity!
HOW DO I TRACK MY MILES OR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TIME?
All you do is log your miles or activity time throughout the event on a free app such as the Nike app, Strava, MapMyFitness, Walk Tracker, Garmin Connect or any GPS app or device. If you don’t want to download an app, you can easily track your miles manually with a pedometer and log it on paper or in a notebook. We have created a free printable log sheet on our website for you to use.
HOW DO I POST MY PROGRESS?
We’d LOVE to see your progress photos! Take selfies before, during or after your activity – safely of course. Post your photos to our Troll the Trail Group Facebook timeline or use the hashtags #ridevinton and #trollthetrail on your own Facebook, Instagram or YouTube page. Be sure to visit our Facebook page to see all of the Troll the Trail participant’s photos and posts.
DO I SUBMIT MY FINISH DISTANCE OR ACTIVITY TIME?
You can screen shot or share your biking, running or walking app miles/time on the Troll the Trail Group timeline, take a picture of your log sheet and share it to the Troll the Trail Facebook Group timeline or email us your photos at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’d love to see your smiling face selfies with your Troll the Trail medal and swag.

ANYWHERE! We are encouraging all participates to use the Riverside Park Trail system but you can put the miles in anywhere; your neighborhood sidewalks, around town, or even the Old Creamery Nature Trail. You decide – just get outside!
EVERYONE – all ages and fitness levels. Make it more fun and participate as a business group or invite others to join you.
